1.5 million adults in London struggle to afford to eat every day and 400,000 children in London are at risk of missing the next meal. Meanwhile, the UK wastes 10 million tonnes of food a year, and our food industry generates almost 2 million tonnes of good, edible surplus food each year.
The Felix Project is a London-based UK charity set up in 2016 to tackle these issues.
Their model is relatively simple: they rescue good, surplus food from the food industry that cannot be sold and would otherwise go to waste. This is high-quality and nutritious, including a high proportion of fresh fruit and vegetables, baked goods, salads, meat and fish.
This food is collected or received from over 170 suppliers, including supermarkets, wholesalers, farms, restaurants and delis across London. From Sainsbury's to PAUL's, The Felix Project helps businesses across the capital to support a circular economy model with a positive impact on local communities.
Once ‘rescued’, the food is sorted and delivered to more than 350 charities, holiday programmes and primary schools, reaching vulnerable people, children and their families. Last year alone The Felix Project rescued and delivered more than 2,500 tonnes of food, enough to make over 6.5 million meals. As an average, that's 10 tonnes of food and 18,000 meals rescued and delivered every day. This is food that helps fight homelessness, mental health, addiction, isolation or poverty. Despite impressive growth in the last three years, the charity has a waiting list of more than 100 charities, showing the real need and demand for the service they provide.
Volunteers are the backbone of The Felix Project's operations. From driving vans to collecting and distributing food to support the operations of their two depots, over 400 active volunteers help fight food waste and hunger on a regular basis. Flexible shifts, different positions and locations and a growing community of like-minded people make The Felix Project a great organisation to volunteer for.
The Felix Project has partnered with The Vitality Big Half this year. They are still looking for 25 runners for #TeamFelix. Please put on your trainers and fundraise to fight food waste with every step you take. To sign up, email email@example.com
